Fingerprints are one of the best ways to keep the data on your Android device secure. Now, it looks like Google will finally address one of the biggest inconveniences the fingerprint system in Android has had with the upcoming release of Android 16.

You Can Finally Rename Fingerprints After Setting Them Up

This is a feature that has been available in Samsung’s One UI for several years at this point. So, I can’t help but wonder why it took Google so long to catch up.

Either way, the tech giant has finally given us our first taste of the next update coming to Android after Android 16’s stable release later this year with the first preview of the Android 16 QPR1 beta. And one of the smaller pieces of the update is a nice quality-of-life option hidden in your phone’s security settings.

This addition was first spotted by Android Authority, who noticed a new option to Check enrolled fingerprints when looking through the settings menu. Upon tapping on the option, they were taken to a new screen showcasing all the fingerprints currently enrolled in their phone’s security options.

Of course, chances are you already thought to name your fingerprints when setting up your Android phone when you first got it. But if you didn’t, you can now revisit the fingerprints that you’ve added and rename them so you always know what fingerprints are saved to your device. Previously, you were only given the option to delete a fingerprint or add a new one.

    Small Changes Add Up

Again, this is a really small change. But, being as we’ve had the option in other smartphone software for years, it’s good to see Google finally catching up in more ways than one.

Alongside this change, the Android 16 QPR1 beta also gives us our first look at Material 3 Expressive, Google’s upcoming design language change for Android devices. The company claimed that the newest iteration of Material is meant to offer more customization and personalization than ever during a presentation in early May.

However, we’re still waiting to see more of it as Android 16’s development continues. Google is also working on reworking the Find My system to make it even easier to recover your lost Android device. The tech company also showed off a slew of big AI changes coming to its Gemini models in the future at Google I/O on Tuesday, May 20.
