    The Download

    • Try restarting Windows Explorer to fix a frozen Windows 10 taskbar quickly.
    • Log out or restart your computer if the taskbar remains unresponsive.
    • Consider using commands like sfc/scannow or DISM to repair system files causing taskbar issues.

When the Windows 10 taskbar isn’t working, it can manifest in several ways: the taskbar may not respond to your clicks, icons might not appear, or keyboard shortcuts could stop working.

The procedures outlined here depend on launching tasks through Task Manager. However, if you can perform them through the Start menu or other shortcuts, feel free to use those methods instead.

How to Fix a Frozen Windows 10 Taskbar

You might not realize how much you rely on the taskbar until it’s frozen. Here are several solutions to regain control of the bottom bar:

    1. Restart Windows Explorer. To do this, open Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, right-click Windows Explorer (in the Windows processes group), and select Restart.

    2. Disable the News and Interests feed. Some users have reported this action helps fix the Windows 10 taskbar.

This step is applicable only if you can interact with the taskbar. If it unfreezes momentarily, right-click the taskbar and select News and interests > Turn off when possible.

    3. Log out and log back in. This simple action allows Windows to reload the taskbar.

    4. Shut down Windows 10  and then turn it back on. Restarting is another straightforward way to reset the taskbar.

Restarting can be inconvenient because you’ll need to reopen all your windows, but it’s worth trying before moving on to more complicated steps.

    5. Remove the most recent Windows update if the taskbar became unresponsive immediately after the update.

    6. Execute the sfc /scannow command. This System File Checker command prompts Windows 10 to fix any errors it detects in critical system files, which might be causing taskbar issues.

    7. Re-register some Windows components using PowerShell. Search for powershell, right-click Windows PowerShell in the results, and select Run as administrator.

If you can’t search from the taskbar, open Task Manager by pressing (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and enter powershell in the File > Run new task box.

Copy the command exactly as shown, then right-click in PowerShell to paste it. Press Enter to run the command.

      Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register “$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml”}

    8. Run the DISM command. Pairing the RestoreHealth switch with this command can repair corrupt files and potentially fix the Windows 10 taskbar.

To do this, open an elevated Command Prompt, type the following, and press Enter:

      Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

This command may take a while to run. Ensure you’ve tried the above solutions first.

    9. Enable the User Manager service. Locate User Manager in the list of services, double-click it, and press Start if it’s not already running. Change the Startup type to Automatic.

    10. Disable recently opened items. This could cause taskbar malfunctions, and it’s an easy step to reverse if it doesn’t resolve the issue.

Go to Settings > Personalization > Start, then turn off Show recently opened items in Jump Lists on Start or the taskbar and in File Explorer Quick Access.

    11. Run System Restore.  Select a restore point closest to when your issues began for the best results.

    12. Create a new user account and sign in to it. If the taskbar works, transfer your files to the new account and delete the old one.

    13. Reset Windows 10. Reinstalling the operating system is an effective way to resolve software issues permanently. If you’ve tried all the above suggestions, yet the taskbar still isn’t responding, this step should resolve the issue.

    14. Replace the hard drive. If a new Windows installation doesn’t unfreeze the taskbar or if you’re experiencing other strange problems, the hard drive could be the culprit.

Review all previous steps again before opting to replace the hard drive. This is a significant step that may require professional assistance.

Causes of When the Windows 10 Taskbar is Not Responding

The Windows 10 taskbar may freeze due to several reasons, such as an incomplete operating system update, an update bug, corrupted system files, or corrupted user account files.
