Apple may have started working on the newest version of its AirTag tracking devices. Here’s what we know so far.
When Could the AirTag 2 Be Released?
The possibility of Apple developing second-generation AirTags is just a rumor, but based on chatter in the industry, we can hope they’ll become a reality soon.
Here’s why the rumors are growing:
- Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the success of the current AirTags has inspired Apple to develop a follow-up. Further, this rumor says they will launch in 2025. But it’s important to note that Kuo originally suggested mass production would start in late 2024.
- LeaksApplePro on X (formerly Twitter) backs up this idea. However, this source has a less successful track record than other analysts, so we’re less likely to take this guess at face value.
- Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman wrote in his Power On Newsletter in late 2024 that Apple has been working on the AirTag 2, which has moved to the testing phase. Gurman estimated that the new AirTag would be released in 2025.
Is Apple Even Considering the Release of Any Kind of Tracker?
Unlike some of Apple’s other products that see a yearly refresh, like the iPhone and Apple Watch, there’s only ever been one AirTag, making it impossible to use history as any forecaster for a second-gen model.
The reason we think a new version is coming is because of rumors. 9to5Mac cites “reliable sources” in its claim that Apple is expected to show off a new AirTag this fall. As you’re probably familiar, Apple usually releases new iPhones in the fall, so we’ll probably hear all about the AirTag 2 around the same time the iPhone 17 is announced.
Our Thoughts on Potential AirTag 2 Features
AirTags already have a pretty basic function: You attach them to something easily misplaced and then use your iPhone to help you locate it. We don’t see many ways to iterate, but here are some ideas:
Apple Inc.
- Better Location Accuracy: LeaksApplePro claims the next AirTag will feature “3D Precision Finding,” which would likely mean improved spatial tracking in the Find My app. This could include AR visuals showing a precise “blip” in your surroundings to locate lost items more accurately.
- Visual Pro Integration: Kuo suggests that the next AirTag might work with the Vision Pro headset. This lines up with other rumors about interconnected accessories like the Apple Ring.
- Design Changes: Apple might redesign AirTags to be smaller and lighter, or slightly larger, depending on whether new internal components like an updated U2 chip are added.
- Improved Durability: The current IP67 water resistance could be upgraded to IP68, meaning AirTags might survive in deeper water and harsher environments.
- More Color Options: Apple might introduce more color choices for AirTags themselves to expand beyond the current silver-only model and match the variety of accessories already available.
