    Byte-Sized Brief

    • Microsoft is releasing “Mail Bombing” detection.
    • The feature rolls out through July.
    • No setup or action is required on your part.

Microsoft is rolling out a new update to Microsoft Defender for Office 365 that targets a cybercrime tactic known as email bombing. The new “Mail Bombing” detection feature, which is already being rolled out to users, will automatically detect and filter these attacks directly into your junk folder; most people will have it by the first half of July. The best part is that you don’t need to do anything because it’s turned on by default.

Email bombing happens when attackers flood your inbox with thousands of messages, usually by signing you up for newsletters or spam services all at once. The real goal is to hide important emails or create enough confusion so that you’ll fall for a follow-up scam, like a fake IT support call. Microsoft’s new filtering tool provides a layer of protection that could help stop a security breach before it starts.

    The Bottom Line

Microsoft is adding automatic protection in Office 365 that detects and filters out email bombing attacks. It rolls out through July, needs no setup, and helps prevent scams that start with inbox overload.
