Monday, Monday. Here we go again. The weekend rushed by in a blur, but will the work week be so kind and quick? The trick is to savor it all, I suppose, though that’s easier said than done. But you know what they say: A Wordle a day keeps the existential crises away! Let’s solve today’s, shall we?

    How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: A baseball move. Or a very dark night.

The Clue: This Wordle has far more consonants than vowels.

    Okay, spoilers below!

    Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

CLONE wasn’t a bad start, with just 81 words remaining. At this point, I very nearly guessed WITCH (for whatever reason it just popped into my head) and I wish I had, but I went with SAINT instead to rule out the letter ‘A’. This got me down to just 5 words and then I guessed WITCH, which left me with 3. I suppose I just got lucky with PITCH, but I’ll take some late-game luck.

    Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. The Bot gets 1 point for guessing in three and another for beating me. Once again, the Bot takes the lead in May:

    Erik: 12 points

    Wordle Bot: 13 points

    How To Play Competitive Wordle

    • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
    • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
    • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
    • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

    Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “pitch” comes from Old English pic, meaning “a thick, dark, sticky substance” derived from Latin pix (which has the same meaning). Its use expanded metaphorically over time to music (the highness or lowness of a tone) likely from the idea of “fixing” a note, similar to “pitching a tent.” It also evolved to mean throwing, as in pitching a ball, in the 15th century. In the 19-century this evolved into the realm of ideas, as in “a sales pitch”. It is a word with many meanings.
