It’s Wordle Wednesday again! This means we have an extra riddle to solve prior to tackling today’s Wordle. Every Wednesday we do this, because life is just more fun with a little variety. Here’s today’s:

A viking and a dragon live together on an island in the middle of the sea. On the island there are five pools of magical water. Each pool is higher up the mountainside than the last, and the fifth and highest pool can only be reached by the dragon. Drinking from a pool poisons the drinker, but drinking from the next pool higher up immediately cures the poison.

After many years on the island, the two grow tired of one another and agree on a challenge. Each will bring a chalice filled with water for the other to drink. They are allowed to refill their chalice from one of the pools afterwards. On the day of the challenge, both the viking and the dragon drink. The dragon then rushes to the highest pool and drinks deeply. Moments later, the beast drops dead. The viking lives alone on the island. How is this possible?

    How To Solve Today’s Wordle

    The Hint: Chew on this.

The Clue: This Wordle has far more consonants than vowels.

    Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

STORE was a rough start, leaving me with 330 possible solutions. All new letters (obviously) with CHAIN cut that number down to just 5. But the five in question — or at least the ones I could think of — all ended in UNCH. LUNCH, PUNCH, HUNCH, MUNCH, etc. So I came up with a word that had as many of those letters as possible with PLUMB and that slashed the number down to just 1: MUNCH for the win. It meant I couldn’t guess the answer on #3, but if I’d just started guessing randomly I might have missed this one entirely.

    Competitive Wordle Score

    Today’s Wordle Bot

We tied and both the Bot and I guessed in four, so zero points for the both of us, leaving our June total at:

    Erik: 11 points

    Wordle Bot: 8 points

    How To Play Competitive Wordle

    • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
    • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
    • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
    • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

    Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word munch likely comes from Middle English mounchen, meaning “to chew,” which is probably related to Middle Dutch monken or Old French monger (“to eat”). It’s imitative in origin—mimicking the sound or action of chewing. First recorded use in English is around the late 14th century.
