    Byte-Sized Brief

    • Live streamers will need to be 16+.
    • Streams with minors need an adult present.
    • The change starts on July 22.

How young is too young to live stream? Starting July 22, YouTube will require its users to be at least 16 years old to live stream from their channels, a significant increase from the current 13-year-old minimum. The change is designed to protect minors on the platform, especially in unsupervised live stream settings.

So, what happens if younger teens do show up on camera? If a live stream features someone between the ages of 13 and 15 without an adult present, YouTube may turn off the live chat or even remove the stream. In some cases, the channel might permanently lose its ability to live stream entirely. Younger users who still want to go live can do so through an adult’s account (or their own) as long as an adult is visibly present.

    The Bottom Line

Beginning July 22, YouTube will require users to be at least 16 to start a live stream. Streams with younger teens must have an adult visibly present or risk losing streaming access altogether.
