Ever had your iPhone show your location as a block away—or worse, in the wrong neighborhood? When Find My becomes inaccurate or unreliable, I use a few tweaks to make it accurate when it matters most.

Enable “Send Last Location”
Send Last Location is a toggle on your iPhone that automatically sends the device’s last known location to Apple right before its battery dies or reaches a critically low level. It ensures that even if your device battery finally runs out, you can at least know where it was before shutting down, giving you a much better chance of recovering it.
To enable Send Last Location, open the Settings app and navigate to [Your Name] > Find My > Find My iPhone, then toggle on Send Last Location.
With that set, you’ll at least have a reference point if your device is lost or turned off.

Keep Bluetooth On
It might seem unrelated, but Bluetooth plays a major role in how accurately Find My tracks your iPhone—especially when it’s offline. Apple’s Find My network uses Bluetooth to detect nearby Apple devices. Thanks to this, other nearby devices can anonymously report your phone’s location, even if your iPhone isn’t online.
That’s why it’s important to keep Bluetooth on, especially when your device is offline, as that may help improve the accuracy of Find My. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, then enable the Bluetooth toggle on the next page.
Alternatively, you can swipe down from the top-right of your iPhone and tap the Bluetooth icon. Remember, you don’t need to be actively using Bluetooth accessories—just having it enabled lets your iPhone communicate with the broader Find My network.
This is especially useful if you lose your phone in a place with poor reception. Nearby Apple devices, like someone’s iPad or MacBook, can silently pick up your phone’s Bluetooth signal and help pinpoint its location. It all happens securely and in the background. However, Bluetooth’s range is limited to approximately 10 meters (30 feet), so while it works offline, it won’t work if there are no Apple devices nearby.

Turn on Wi-Fi or Cellular Data
Turning on Wi-Fi or cellular data also helps to improve the accuracy of Find My. Find My uses a combination of GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular towers, and Bluetooth signals to help pinpoint the exact location of your iPhone.
Wi-Fi plays a crucial role in location accuracy, particularly indoors or in areas where GPS signals are weak or obstructed by buildings. Cellular data provides triangulation using cell towers, supplementing GPS and Wi-Fi signals to refine your iPhone’s location accuracy.
But most importantly, for Find My to track your iPhone in real-time, your device needs to be connected to the internet, either through Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Without an active connection, your iPhone can’t send location updates or communicate with the Find My network effectively, thus affecting the accuracy of location data you see in the Find My app.
For better accuracy, ensure your device is always connected to the internet. Connect to Wi-Fi if possible; if you’re away from Wi-Fi, use your cellular data.
The main downside is that staying connected at all times, especially on cellular data, can make your phone battery drain fast.

Enable Location Services
If your GPS is turned off, your device may not report its real-time position, making it harder (or impossible) to find if lost or stolen. For the best accuracy, you need to enable Location Services so Find My knows your phone’s current location at all times.
To enable GPS on your iPhone, follow these steps:
- Navigate to Settings > Privacy & Security and select Location Services.
- On the next page, toggle on the switch next to Location Services.
- Finally, select Find My in the app list, and on the next page, set it to While Using the App.
The last step is crucial because Find My requires continuous access to your location for the best results.

Turn On Precise Location
Even with Location Services enabled, your iPhone might only report an approximate location, unless Precise Location is enabled. This separation of your device’s approximate and precise location is handy when working with certain third-party apps that only need to know your general area and not where you are exactly.
But for Find My, you need to provide access to your specific location if you want to track the exact location of your iPhone at any time. To enable precise location:
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Scroll down the page and select Find My from the app list.
- Finally, toggle on Precise Location.
This setting allows Find My to pinpoint your device down to a few meters. It’s a crucial setting that comes in handy when you’re trying to locate your lost iPhone using Find My in a crowded area or inside a building. It ensures that the Find My app won’t just show a vague blue circle on the map, but a much more exact location marker.
While there are different ways to find your lost iPhone, using Find My is one of the most accessible methods. If Find My isn’t as accurate as it should be, the tips discussed above will help improve precision so you can reliably find your device if you misplace it. Don’t forget that you can remotely disable a stolen phone, too.
