    • Use the remote to select Settings > Wi-Fi at the top of the screen.
    • Select the existing network and then choose Forget network at the bottom.
    • Return to the list of networks and follow the on-screen steps to pick a new Wi-Fi network.

This article explains how to connect your Chromecast to a new Wi-Fi network and what to do if you’re having Wi-Fi problems with your device.

How Do I Put My Chromecast On a New Wi-Fi Network?

If you get a new router or change your network settings, you’ll need to update Chromecast with the new Wi-Fi details. To do this, you’ll first disconnect the device from the existing network. Here’s how it works:

These steps work for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer.

    1. Using the Chromecast remote, select the Settings (gear) icon at the top right of the screen.

    2. Select Wi-Fi from the menu.

    3. Select the Wi-Fi network the Chromecast is currently connected to.

    4. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and choose Forget network.

    5. Confirm by selecting OK.

    6. Use the back button to return to the list of available Wi-Fi networks.

    7. Select the Chromecast’s new Wi-Fi network from the list.

    8. Enter the Wi-Fi password. After a few moments, you’ll see a “Connecting” message followed by “Connected successfully” for confirmation.

Why Won’t My Chromecast Connect to My New Wi-Fi?

Your Chromecast will not connect to your new Wi-Fi network automatically. As useful as that would be, the previous network stored in the Chromecast is used until you change it. It doesn’t matter if you got a new router or if your phone and other devices are connected to the new network; you still need to make the change manually on the Chromecast.

Some factors, like the distance between the Chromecast and router, can complicate this process. See our list of ways to fix Wi-Fi issues if you’re having trouble.

If you have a Chromecast (3rd gen or older), Chromecast Ultra, or Chromecast Audio, you’ll need to use the Google Home app to give the Chromecast new Wi-Fi details. Select the Chromecast from the Devices tab and then go to Settings > Device information > Wi-Fi > Forget this network.

Having trouble connecting to the other Wi-Fi network? You can factory reset your Chromecast and select the Wi-Fi network as part of the initial setup process. This could prove helpful if your device is experiencing strange glitches.

Fixes for Other Wi-Fi Issues on Chromecast

Here are some other common Chromecast Wi-Fi problems and solutions:

    • Check the basics: Make sure the Chromecast is plugged into the wall and powered on. If the LED isn’t on, the device is either off or broken. The LED should be white. If the Chromecast is blinking white or another color, you will need to address the problem.
    • Ensure the device has adequate power: If you have intermittent connectivity issues, or the LED light doesn’t remain on and white all the time, you could have a power issue. The USB cable may be defective, or you might have a broken charger. Try switching the USB cable, power adapter, or both.
    • Update the Google Home app: If you’re connecting to a new Wi-Fi network from the Google Home app, ensure it’s up to date on your phone or tablet. If you have an outdated Google Home app, it may fail to set your Chromecast’s Wi-Fi connection.
    • Fix signal strength problems: If there are any obstructions between your Chromecast and your wireless router, your Chromecast will have trouble connecting to the Wi-Fi network. If that’s the case, try to improve your Wi-Fi signal. Use an HDMI extension cable to reposition your Chromecast, remove as many obstructions as you can, and consider repositioning the router.
    • Address network hardware problems: There may be an issue with your modem or wireless router. Even if other devices connect just fine, like your phone or laptop, an issue with your network hardware may be affecting your Chromecast. Restart your modem and router, and check to see if the Chromecast can connect.
    • Update or reset your Chromecast if necessary: If you’re unable to complete the setup process, or your Chromecast LED blinks red or orange, it may have an internal fault. Try to update your Chromecast or factory reset your Chromecast, and then see if you can set it up and connect it to Wi-Fi.

    FAQ

    • How do I reset a Chromecast?

To reset your Chromecast with Google TV, use the remote to select your profile > All settings. Next, go to System > About > Factory Reset.

    • How do I Chromecast from an iPhone?

First, set up your Chromecast using the Google Home app for iOS. Then, on the Google Home app, tap the Media icon; under Manage Your System, choose whether you want to access music, video, radio, or podcast services. Select Link on your available streaming apps, such as Netflix and Hulu, then follow the prompts to link your account. Open the media you want to cast, click the Casting icon on your iPhone, and then choose your Chromecast device.
