    Byte-Sized Brief

    • Waymo has received the go-ahead to expand.
    • Safety seems to be improving in robotaxis.
    • More companies are entering the market.

On Monday, Google said that Waymo, its self-driving taxi company, received approval to expand its services in San Francisco, including the South Bay area, and into San Jose. The news comes as Elon Musk is preparing to roll out a self-driving taxi service in Texas next month and to expand it into California later this year. As consumers, we’ll likely see more and more of these robotaxi services available in more places.

We recently used Waymo in San Francisco, and it seems to be a solid service. Waymo recently released a new study that highlights how much more adept self-driving cars are at avoiding accidents than human drivers. According to the study, Waymo logged 96 percent fewer vehicle-to-vehicle accidents at intersections than human drivers. So, are self-driving taxis safer? That remains to be seen, but it looks like we’ll probably get to find out in the future.
