    ZDNET’s key takeaways

    • Google will unveil the Pixel 10 series next week, making it the best time to consider which model – new or old – to purchase.
    • Key upgrades with the new Pixel 10 series include a MagSafe-like charging capability, the Tensor G5 chip, and enhanced AI tools.
    • The release of the newer model should further lower the price for older models like the Pixel 9 series.

It’s that time of the year: The next big Pixel phone series is on the horizon, yet thousands of unknowing users are making their way to retailers, carrier stores, and Google itself to buy the newest — but soon to be outdated — handsets. If you’re considering upgrading to the Pixel 9 series, do me — and most importantly, yourself — a favor, and wait until next Wednesday before committing.

With Google expected to unveil the new Pixel 10 series, which includes the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold, on August 20, you’ll be much better equipped to make your next smartphone purchase in a week’s time.

Also: This rumored Pixel 10 feature puts Google above Samsung and OnePlus for me – here’s why

Not only will the specifications and feature upgrades of the Pixel 10 series be confirmed, but there’s a high chance that older models will receive a steeper discount than they already have.

What’s new with the Pixel 10 series?

The Pixel 10 series is expected to succeed the Pixel 9 series (pictured) across the board, from the foldable to the non-Pro model.

While Google has yet to officially announce the Pixel 10 series, I’ve gathered the three biggest changes from the latest rumors and leaks that will make waiting until next week worth it.

    1. PixelSnap Qi2 charging: Even though I’m an Android user at heart, I couldn’t help but feel envious of iPhones’ MagSafe capabilities over the past few years. That’s why PixelSnap, Google’s interpretation of the magnetic accessory ecosystem, is such a big deal. The feature, which is expected to support Qi2 wireless charging, will allow the new Pixel 10 phones to snap onto kickstands, charging docks, and more without needing any external accessories.
    2. Tensor G5 chipset: Google has been playing a rather dangerous game with its processors, but the Tensor G5 may be its most confident bet yet. The chipset is rumored to be manufactured by TSMC, as opposed to Samsung Foundry, for a more power-efficient and performant experience. Tensor G5 may also be the gateway for advanced Gemini/AI features.
    3. Dedicated telephoto camera for the non-Pro model: For the first time ever, the non-Pro Pixel phone will reportedly receive a dedicated telephoto sensor, allowing it to capture farther distances while retaining details. If Google retains the $799 price point from last year, the Pixel 10 may be the most promising option of the bunch.

Who should buy a Google Pixel phone today?

That said, there’s still one reason to buy a Google Pixel phone today: if your handset is non-functional, severely damaged, or lost. For any of those reasons, it would make the most sense to buy a new phone immediately.

It may be an even smarter play to purchase a current model like the Pixel 9 or 8 series from a major retailer like Amazon, Best Buy, or Target, so that if they do discount the phones next week, you may be eligible to receive a price adjustment in the form of a partial refund or gift card.
